Easter Bank Holiday Monday Date.

Easter Bank Holiday Monday Date is 9th April 2012.

Easter Monday was created as a bank holiday back in 1871 by the Bank Holidays Act 1871. Although the day is a bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland it is not a holiday date in Scotland.

If you are wondering why the date changes each year you can blame the Council of Nicaea who back in AD325 came up with a very complicated system. Their Easter Rule said that the festival should be celebrated on the first Sunday that occurs after the first full moon, on or after the vernal equinox. To make the date even harder to work out the ecclesiastical full moon often falls on a different day from the astronomical full moon. But Easter will always be between the dates of March 22 and April 25.

The good news though is that as Good Friday is also a holiday many people can take the opportunity to have 4 days off work and this is reflected by airport operator BAA revealing that Heathrow handled over 5.8 million passengers in April 2011 (up 31.5 per cent on April 2010), while another of BAA’s major UK airports, Edinburgh, also enjoyed a record April month with over 776,000 passengers handled. Gatwick airport in West Sussex revealed an even bigger rise than Heathrow with 34.2 per cent more air passengers in comparison to April 2010. The rise was attributed to the Easter holiday season falling entirely in April.
